There is nothing like the taste of freshly homemade tortillas, which is why both electric and manual tortilla presses and makers are starting to become very popular kitchen gadgets to have. As more and more people start adapting to a gluten free diet, the need for making your own tortillas becomes even more necessary, since there are typically not a whole lot of options for taco shells you can buy in the store.
There are several advantages to having a tortilla maker, the main one being ease of use. Making your own shells by hand can be a sticky, frustrating process. Because the dough needs to be rolled very thin, doing it by hand can take quite a long time, especially when you run into issues like the dough sticking to your rolling pin or moving it off the table onto your griddle.
While it may seem intimidating to some people to try and make their own tortilla shells at home, fortunately there are some great gadgets for your kitchen that can simplify the process and give you a great end result.
Cast Iron Manual Tortilla Press
This is one of the most popular options because it helps you get perfectly shaped tortillas and lets you control how they are cooked. Being made out of cast iron makes it durable and effective in pressing out the tortillas. You will need to give it some care to prevent rusting (not dishwasher safe) but it otherwise is easy to use and clean up. The one pictured is a 6.5 diameter size, though there is also an 8 Inch one available here. While some may want a larger tortilla, the taste is so good you won’t mind eating more than one (or two maybe!)

Electric Tortilla Maker
This is another option for those who want to make their own tortillas. The machine works by pressing and cooking the tortilla in one easy step. With temperature control, you are able to decide how hot it gets. The obvious downfall is you can only cook one tortilla at a time this way, though cooking time does not take that long. It will take some practice to get them perfect, but that goes with any kitchen tool and appliance. Learn More Here
If you decide to go with the manual tortilla press instead of the electric tortilla maker which cooks it for you, you’ll also want to make sure you have a good griddle to cook them on for the best results.
