Digital Meat Thermometer

Any cook knows a digital meat thermometer is an indispensable tool when it comes to cooking meats like beef, pork, chicken, and seafood, but finding the right kind can sometimes be a little difficult. Having one that is reliable and reads quickly is essential in being able to accurately temp the foods you are cooking.

Our favorite thermometer so far (especially because of it’s low and affordable price) is the CDN Meat Thermometer with the Taylor Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer coming in a close second. Both of these options are reasonably priced for less than $20 (often times less than $15!) and work well.

Analog meat thermometers, while useful for their time, cannot do what the digital ones are typically capable of now. They often take forever to read an accurate temp, and so when you’re stuck waiting it’s not much fun! They are also often limited for being useful for only meat, which if you are an experienced cook who makes everything from bread to yogurt to candy, this can be a big problem! Having one kitchen gadget that can be used for multiple purposes is well worth it!

We’ve found that when you cook by temperature it is much easier to avoid overcooking meats so you can ensure they are always tender and flavorful. You don’t have to worry about burning something because you can’t tell it’s done and you’re afraid of it being undercooked.

All digital thermometers need to be taken care of properly, even if they do claim to be waterproof or able to withstand digital temperatures. While it would be nice if these claims held up to be true, we know from experience there really is no such thing. For this reason, you should never directly place it in the oven with your foods, nor do we recommend placing it in the dishwasher. When the digital part (which don’t forget holds a battery) is exposed to extreme temperatures, it can cause a multitude of problems, with the best case scenario being it just won’t work anymore. Dishwashers can especially be problematic if the temperatures get very high, which is possible in any dishwasher. This can sometimes cause the screen to fog or have condensation, basically rendering the unit completely useless.

So, what are the features of the two digital thermometers we recommend? Both allow for you to take temperatures between -40 to 450 degrees, both come with a carrying sleeve which can easily hook onto your shirt pocket, and both give you an accurate read within seconds. The only reason we gave the CDN one a slightly better rating is because it also features a callibrate button, which is useful if you are going from one extreme temp to another.

We’ve worked in commercial kitchens with much more expensive thermometers and honestly found both of these affordable options to be fantastic for just about any cook in any kitchen – they both do the job fast, accurately, and side by side they read the same temperature :)
